Spending time outdoors, especially in green spaces, is one of the fastest ways to improve your health and happiness!
A recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research showed that simply spending 20 minutes in a park is enough to improve your well-being. In this case, researchers studied 94 adults who visited one of three urban parks in Birmingham, AL over the summer months.
All of the participants were given fitness trackers to measure their physical activity. Afterwards, they answered questions about their life satisfaction and mood, with a maximum value of 55 — before and after their park visit.. The results concluded with a park visit of around 32 minutes and their well-being scores rose to 2 points in 60% of the participants!
Additionally, all of the participants were not told to participate in a physical activity, although plenty of researchers suggest that exercise is great for mental health. For most people, simply being in the green space seemed to be enough to spark a change in one’s mood, says Yuen.
