1. Midnight Mission
Location: Los Angeles, CA 90014
Every day the Midnight Mission offers three meals to the homeless and near-homeless community throughout the year. They have served over one million meals in 2012 which is a milestone that they have not met since the Great Depression. 2. STOCK THE PANTRY: Sort Food with AIDS Project L.A.
Location: North Hollywood, CA 91606
This Friday, August 31, 2018, the AIDS Project will be hosting a charity event where participants will be able to prepare nutritious grocery bags for those living with HIV/AIDS. The AIDS Project LA is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by HIV disease, reducing the incidence of HIV infection, and advocating for fair and effective HIV-related public policy. Throughout the month, volunteers help prepare grocery and nutrition bags for distribution through the Necessities of Life Program, which provides food and other basic necessities to low-income people living with HIV/AIDS.
3. Outdoor Volunteer Day: Alta Vicente
Location: Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275
On Saturday, September 1, 2018, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is hosting a volunteer opportunity from 9 AM to 12 PM where participants will be working on removing invasive weeds which degrade important wildlife habitats and replacing them with native, drought-tolerant plants! The event will be fully outdoors so participants are advised to wear closed-toed shoes, sun protection, and bring water and snacks.
4. Fight Hunger at Sunday’s Farmers Market in Hollywood
Location: Hollywood, CA 90028
This Sunday, September 2, 2018, Food Forward is working together with the community to fight hunger and food waste in Southern California by rescuing fresh surplus produce, connecting this abundance with people in need, and inspiring others to do the same. Participants will be collecting fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise get thrown away, and donating 100% to local food banks, pantries, and shelters. Volunteers will be joining the Glean Team to help collect donations of fresh produce from vendors at your local farmers market and box, sort and weigh the produce. The event will take place from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
5. Urban Scholar Academy’s Homework Club
Location: Inglewood, CA 90301
On Monday, September 3, 2018, the Urban Scholar Academy provides support with homework and projects for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The volunteers can help assist scholars to develop after-school study habits, efforts, and focus. This volunteer opportunity does require a 4 to 8 hour per week commitment.
