Have you ever dreamt of the day when your Starbucks drink could be delivered to your exact location? Well, today’s announcement marks a historic moment as two iconic, global companies partner up to deliver a revolutionized customer experience!
Today, Starbucks Coffee Company announced their “New Retail” partnership that will enable a seamless “Starbucks Experience” and transform the coffee industry in China! Beginning next month, Starbucks will be collaborating with the Alibaba ecosystem, including Ele.me, Hema, Tmall, Taobao, and Alipay to help accomplish the new delivery program. Starbucks will be setting up “Starbucks Delivery Kitchens” in Hema supermarkets which are operated by Alibaba, where shoppers will be able to order deliveries. The Starbucks Delivery Kitchens will be specifically designed for Starbucks delivery order fulfillment with further expanding delivery capabilities while ensuring the highest levels of the third-place in-store customer experience!
“Our transformational partnership with Alibaba will reshape modern retail, and represents a significant milestone in our efforts to exceed the expectations of Chinese consumers.”
-Kevin Hohnson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Starbucks Coffee Company
Moreover, Starbucks has dominated the premium coffee market in China as it has more than 3,300 locations and coffee chains have seen a growing demand with a reported $3.2 billion in sales in 2017! And “thanks to the elevated customer experience delivered by their 45,000 partners, Starbucks is growing and innovating faster in China than anywhere else in the world,” said Kevin Johnson. Their strategic partnership is part of Alibaba’s broader New Retail push, which aims to transform how commerce is conducted by merging online and offline experiences.
The two companies will do a trial run beginning in September using Alibaba’s Ele.me delivery service at 150 Starbucks outlets in Beijing and Shanghai. But, not to worry, they plan to expand the service to 2,000 shops in 30 cities by the end of the year!
