Have you ever heard of a restaurant creating and distributing their own currency? Well, as an anniversary celebration, this well-known restaurant is doing just that. Take a look at McDonald’s new coin that can give you a lot in return!
We’re celebrating 50 years of Big Mac by creating a global currency—MacCoin—each one worth a free Big Mac around the 🌎, with 5 collectible designs for 5 legendary decades. Starting August 2, collect your own MacCoins when you buy a Big Mac while supplies last. #BigMac50 pic.twitter.com/xn8Z9GNLSp

Beginning on August 2, McDonald’s will be distributing coins at more than 14,000 restaurants in 5 countries to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac! Starting this Thursday during lunch, customers can receive a ‘MacCoin’ with the purchase of a Big Mac, which they could later be redeemed for a free Big Mac until the end of the year! The coins will feature five different designs, one for each of the Big Mac’s decades, with references to the art, music, and pop culture of the period, and they’ll also feature seven languages — Arabic, English, Indonesian, Mandarin, Portuguese, French, and Spanish — along the rim of the coin as a tribute to the countries that are participating. The MacCoin from the ’70s showcases the decade’s flower power; the ’80s alluding to pop art; the ’90s defined with bold, abstract shapes; the early ’00s focuses on the technology advances of the century; the ’10s MacCoin showcases the evolution of communication. Everyone has the option of simply collecting them since they are limited edition, or they can redeem them to get a Mic Mac for free.
All things considered, McDonald’s has been seeing a slow growth rate and thus has begun implementing more strategies to remain competitive. Other restaurants like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts have been implementing more technological advances and changes to their menu options which have made them more attractive towards their customers. Dunkin’ for instance now offers its breakfast sandwiches all day, and McDonald’s responded by offering two breakfast sandwiches for $4. Also, as we reported last week, McDonald’s announced their new deal of giving away free Medium french fries every Friday for the rest of the year and have partnered up with Uber Eats to make deliveries easier. McDonald’s has reported a 2.6% same-store sales growth in their U.S. restaurants which was below the Wall Street expectations of 3%. But, as McDonald’s continues to implement these new changes and deals, they have been able to bring in younger new customers that may otherwise not have thought about ordering from there.
