The recent announcements from several well-known companies like McDonald’s and Starbucks have revolutionized the way others help contribute to the well being of the planet. Now, the world’s largest hotel company is announcing their plan to remove plastic straws and drink stirrers from all of their 6,500 hotels and resorts!
Marriott International announced today that their removal of plastic straws will help eliminate 1 billion straws and 250 million stirrers by July 2019! As the Marriott plans to eliminate their environmental footprint from all of their locations completely be next year, they have already begun replacing their plastic straws in some locations. Amanda Cox, the resort’s director of sales and marketing, has seen how the Marriott has received amazing feedback from guests as they have posted several signs explaining why straws aren’t offered.
Additionally, there are over 60 Marriott hotels in the United Kingdom that have already begun eliminating plastic straws from their more than since the country has already banned them. Hotels in Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Australia have already made similar changes and a recent study at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort in Florida saw that they were using 65,000 straws each month before they eliminated them in March. After their partial removal of straws, Cox said that they anticipated half of their guests to request for paper straws for their beverages, but have only seen about 20% making the request.
Moreover, earlier this year, the Marriott began replacing small bottles of shampoo and conditioner with in-shower dispensers in many of their hotels and are planning on having dispensers in 1,500 hotels by the end of this year, which will eliminate 35 million plastic toiletry bottles annually! The year-long time frame will let the hotels use their existing supply of plastic straws as they find alternatives to give to their customers upon request.
