McDonald’s wants their “happy meal” option to be 600 calories or fewer in their push for a Healthier Generation. The company developed a comprehensive plan for 20 major markets in 2013 to increase customers’ access to fruit, vegetables, and water. Soda was also removed from the Happy Meal section of its menu.
By June, McDonald’s said 100 percent of Happy Meal combinations offered on Happy Meal menu boards will be 600 calories or fewer, and 100 percent of those offerings will be compliant with the new nutrition criteria for added sugar, saturated fat, and 78 percent compliant with the new sodium criteria.
McDonald’s says that by the end of this year it will include a low-fat dairy option in every Happy Meal:
- Apple slices on every happy meal.
- A new smaller size French fries (1.1 ounces)
- Reduce the total sodium by 15% or more
